On 24th March, 1915, the 1st Royal West Kent battalion of 13 Brigade, 5th Division moved into trench in the Ypres salient where they remained until relieved on 26th March. At 7am on 26th March, the enemy began bombarding B Company’s trenches with trench mortars and shelling the woods behind with shrapnel. Some damage was caused to the parapet and the trench and two men were killed while some others were buried. Things then went quiet for a time until the middle of the afternoon when these same trenches were hit by heavy mortars. One of the battalion’s casualties on this day was Charles Haggerty who was killed.
